Question: Is it ok for me to remove my cast myself?

I broke my ankle 6 weeks ago(actually the x-rays showed only a severe crack) . I was placed in a short leg cast and was told to come back in 6 weeks to get it removed. I couldn't go back for my appointment because there was a family emergency, and when I tried to reschedule, I was told the next available opening is in two weeks. I'm normally an active guy and having to wear this cast really slows me down. My ankle feels fine. Would it be ok if I removed the cast myself? I have the right tools. If something goes wrong, I could be at the hospital within 15 minutes. What are some risks if any?
answer

Good Evening,

Removing the cast before the doctor says you can is only opening yourself up to spending a much longer length of time in a cast or having surgery to repair new injuries; or both.

Leave the cast on until your doctor gives the okay.

I realize that this cast is an inconvenience to you, but think about the further grief you'll bring yourself if you play doctor yourself and your leg isn't completely ready to be removed yet.

Good luck.

You ask what the risks are - maybe you could cut yourself? I don't know what the other risks could be, but I would not do it. You have been through six weeks in the cast, so another two weeks would not be the end of the world. Are you sure there are not other clinics that could take the cast off for you? Maybe you could ask them that. They might want to see you again at the end/ cast-off to make sure the ankle has healed etc. so maybe they wouldn't mind if you got someone else to take it off in the meantime? I don't know, I would call the clinic and ask them. Good luck.
